you to the author for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest opinion. The Crossover Paradox will be available for purchase on March 8th. I will do my best to avoid giving spoilers, but it is a sequel, so there is a slight possibility that something will sneak through. You’ve been fairly warned.

I loved The Ascension Machine, book one in the Justic Academy series. Book two continued on excellently, with new obstacles to overcome and even bigger danger. The Crossover Paradox raised the stakes and never let up on the gas.

The main character, Grey, is a roguish character who is trying to make a clean try after lying to everyone for the majority of the previous year. He is back at the Justic Academy, under his own name (well-not really, but that’s a mystery yet to be solved), ready to put the last year behind him. Unfortunately, someone has other plans. When someone is murdered, it is up to Grey and his group of friends to find the real killer- before Grey takes the fall for a crime he didn’t commit.

The story went in unexpected ways, keeping me invested and highly entertained. I loved seeing how smart Grey was, and the way his unconventional past aids him in the situations he finds himself in. He’s such a great character! For a mostly reformed conman, he has a strong sense of right and wrong which I loved. I’m all about the morally complicated characters, but I really do love a character who is more good than not. He’s an easy character to root for.

The Crossover Paradox introduces a few new characters, but some of the original group see less time. While I missed one of the characters (no names given), there was major setup for a future storyline involving him that I’m both excited and scared for. The rest of the supporting cast, so to speak, continued to elevate the book and take it in new directions. I loved that they were all important throughout the book and each character could offer something unique.

This book is meant for middle grade readers and did a great job of remembering that. While there is some violence and a bit of romance, it avoided going over the top with either. Instead, author Rob Edwards balanced each element of the book and tied it all together wonderfully. At the same time, there was a real sense of danger and no character was “safe”, which added to the enjoyment of the book. The Crossover Paradox is a fantastic continuation of the Justice Academy series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.","format","Paperback","editionSlug","the-crossover-paradox-xq8sv","editionID",4524167,"recommend","collections",[141,158],"coverURI","RKPE7AH.4524167.webp","editionTitle","The Crossover Paradox","privateReview","score",100,"lastRead","Feb 19, 2022","authorNames",[288],[289,290,-5],"Rob Edwards","rob-edwards-6gslx","pages",330,"firstPublishedDate","2022-04-08T20:46:14.685Z","firstPublished","March 8, 2022",{"_260":261,"_262":298,"_264":299,"_266":300,"_268":269,"_270":301,"_272":302,"_274":23,"_275":303,"_277":304,"_279":305,"_281":17,"_282":306,"_284":307,"_286":308,"_291":312,"_313":314,"_293":316,"_295":317},3247990,"2019-11-15T00:00:00.000Z","Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. This book is available now.

Funny story: I couldn’t find this book one afternoon. I looked in all the usual places that I “lose” things, but I still couldn’t find it. Guess where it was? In the hands of my sixth grader, who was very interested in reading it. That’s a pretty high recommendation for the book just right there. I have a feeling he’ll be curled up with it soon.

This book follows Max and his best friend Jonathan. They’ve just moved with their families to Europa, as part of a colonization. The two best buds manage to get themselves into trouble on a pretty regular basis, but their usual hijinks give way to the possibility of real trouble when they notice that things seem a little off. What did they stumble on? More importantly: will they survive?

Max was a fun character to read about. Trouble follows him, but he’s not a bad kid. He was actually really sweet. Both he and Jonathan were very believable and- I’m sure- easy for middle-graders to relate to. Their relationship was a joy to read.

This book is full of action, very rarely pausing to explain things. This is perfect for someone like my son, who is able to glean any background information that is included among other things that are happening, and prefers his stories to be action-packed. There’s never a dull moment.

Frozen Secrets is the beginning of what I think will be a highly enjoyable series. If you’ve got a middle-grade/YA reader who likes sci-fi, this is not one to miss. Keep this book in mind if you’re looking for something fun to give as a gift.","frozen-secrets-europa-academy-1-pmkmf",4227364,[141,158,147],"Q1DMLI7.4227364.webp","Frozen Secrets (Europa Academy, #1)",80,"Nov 19, 2019",[309],[310,311,-5],"Myles Christensen","myles-christensen-25qhs",298,"genres",[315],"Science Fiction","2020-02-25T20:46:14.686Z","January 25, 2020","visitingStorygazer","availableGenres",[315],"availableTags",[],"availableCollections",[141,158,147],"reloadNeeded","routes/_storylace.user","routes/_storylace.user.$username.library","actionData","errors"]
